Safety First
We Move Metal Safely
The health and safety of our employees, customers, suppliers, and communities is our most important core value. Safety is integrated into our daily operations: our programs are designed around hazard and risk recognition and mitigation. We use best management practices to achieve world-class performance, leadership engagement, and compliance.
Our Safety
Responsibility
At Reliance, safety is everyone’s responsibility. By sharing that accountability for training, knowledge, and practice of safe behaviors, we continue to move closer to our goal of zero injuries.
Safety in Practice
Our SMART Safety program is focused on integrating a robust culture of safety and health across all our operations through peer-to-peer safety engagements and observations.
Watching out for one another strengthens our commitment while increasing interactions.
This consistently reminds that creating an injury-free environment takes a mindset of care, intention, and daily commitment.

*YEAR ENDED DECEMBER 31
Our commitment to safety is reflected in our continuous improvement over the last several years – both for injuries and severity. Although we have opportunity to improve, our 10% and 15% year-over-year improvement reflects the leadership and passion Reliance has for eliminating workplace injuries.
Reliance uses several indicators to assess health and safety performance. Lagging indicators include the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) and Lost Time Incident Rate (LTIR), as well as the average Department of Transportation Recordable Accident Rate per million miles (DOT Rate).
Reliance was also lower than the MSCI (peer) average of 3.19, as reported in their most recent 2024 survey. A lower TRIR means that fewer people are injured on the job, and fewer lives are negatively impacted.
Safety First, Always
“What safety means to me is watching out for yourself, coworkers, and knowing they are watching out for you, so everyone goes home to family.”
