ISO 9000 Q&A:
Answers to some frequently
asked Questions
Q. What is ISO?
- ISO (International Organization for Standardization)
is comprised of standards organizations from 91 countries. The organization
which represents the United States is ANSI (American National Standards
Institute).
Q. What is ISO 9000?
- It is an international quality system set
of standards which acknowledges that a companys products and/or
services are produced according to a verifiable process.
Q. Why is ISO 9000 Certification
Important?
- By receiving one of the ISO 9000 certifications for a facility,
it becomes universally recognized as having a well-documented quality
control product design, manufacturing and service process.
Today, more customers around the world are requiring that suppliers
be ISO certified. These customers want to be assured that the products
they buy are of the highest value. It is easy to see that companies
with an ISO certification have a real advantage over competitors without
certification.
The ISO certification process truly does make a companys quality
process better. During certification, all elements of the companys
quality process are realistically appraised and acted upon. Beneficial
quality improvements are always the result.
Q. Can Products Be ISO 9000 Certified?
- No. Only the quality system in-place at a given facility can be
ISO 9000 certified.
Q. Are There Different Levels of ISO 9000
Certification?
- Yes. Since not all facilities have identical operations within them,
ISO has developed several certification levels to reflect the types
of operations within a facility that can affect quality.
- ISO 9001 This is
the most comprehensive certification of a companys quality process.
It covers virtually every operation within a facility that affects
quality including; management, design, purchasing, manufacturing and
after-the-sale service functions.
- ISO 9002 This level
has been developed for facilities which may not have operations such
as product design, after-the-sales service and other activities required
for ISO 9001 certification.
- ISO 9003 This is
the basic certification level for a facility which adheres to ISOs
12 quality assurance elements for inspection and testing of the final
product.
As you can see, ISO 9001 certification provides customers with the
highest degree of quality assurance. It is also the certification
level each facility which manufactures Reliance motors has
attained.
Q. How is Certification Decided?
- Independent certification organizations, which meet ISO requirements
and are approved by ISO, visit facilities, analyze procedures and
provide certification.
Q. Must This Certification Be Renewed?
- Yes. Most certification organizations require a full audit every
three years. Within this period, these organizations periodically
survey certified manufacturers to ensure that quality systems are
maintained.

Is ANSI/ASQC, Q91, Q92
or Q93 Equivalent to ISO 9001, ISO 9002 or
ISO 9003? |
